Microsoft Office 365 is popular among organizations. It’s also becoming popular among cyber criminals and other adversaries looking to compromise businesses and spread malware. That’s why F-Secure’s new Cloud Protection for Microsoft Office 365 aims to help organizations relying on Microsoft’s cloud-based email counter the malicious emails waiting in employees’ inboxes.
Malicious emails are well-known threats. According to F-Secure’s most recent attack landscape report email was the most common source of malware in 2019, triggering nearly 43% of detections for the entire year.*
And as organizations migrate parts of their infrastructure to the cloud, attackers are following them while adjusting their tactics, techniques, and procedures to become more effective against targets.
“Systems that generate a lot of email notifications or admin alerts provide good materials for phishers to spoof,” said F-Secure Solution Director Teemu Myllykangas. “When clicking on these messages becomes part of a normal routine, many people will stop paying attention to the content so they can keep their day moving. Companies that want their workforce to stay productive while using services like Office 365 need to prepare for this scenario.”
F-Secure Cloud Protection helps secure organizations using Microsoft Office 365 by protecting them from malicious content in emails and other Exchange items (such as tasks, calendar appointments, contacts, and sticky notes).
Key capabilities offered by the solution include:
Thorough scanning of all Office 365 items (email, tasks, appointments, etc.) and URLs for harmful content
Sandbox for detonating suspicious files to safely detect malicious behavior
Seamless cloud-to-cloud integration for easy deployment within minutes
Furthermore, F-Secure’s award-winning endpoint protection, cloud protection, and detection and response solutions fit within one integrated management framework, making it simple for organizations to upgrade their security capabilities.
According to Myllykangas, the solution aims to help organizations fulfill their security obligations in the ‘shared responsibility’ model used by many cloud services.
“Many cloud services will take care of some security issues, but expect the users to assume some responsibility, such as securing their content. This ‘shared responsibility’ model attempts to define security as common ground between service providers and users. However, this is often unclear to users, making certain aspects of security more of a no-man’s land,” explained Myllykangas. “Our solution helps ensure organizations are taking the steps they need to meet these obligations to protect their data.”
